“An Odyssey Unequaled in Modern Times”: Edgar Snow on the Long March

2026-10-22

Today marks the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Red Army’s Long March in China. But what exactly was the Long March? Why does it still resonate with generations of Chinese people nine decades later?

Back in 1936, American journalist Edgar Snow crossed military blockades to reach a region largely closed to the outside world. There, he met Red Army leaders and heard firsthand accounts of the Long March. His book, Red Star Over China, brought one of the earliest detailed accounts of this historic journey to international readers, describing it as an “odyssey unequaled in modern times.”

Now, thanks to modern technology, scenes from Snow’s journey can be visually recreated, bringing his reporting to life almost like a documentary filmed at the time.

Watch this video from China Xinhua News to revisit the Long March through the eyes of a journalist who helped bring its story to the world.
