A moving moment at the 2026 Belt and Road Journalists Forum in Nanjing.

While speaking about the importance of understanding a country’s history and the experiences that have shaped its people, John Wallace, Executive Director of Australia’s Asia Pacific Journalism Centre, became visibly emotional as he recalled visiting the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders during a forum-organized media tour.

Having visited other museums documenting the Japanese invasion of China, Wallace said confronting this painful history again brought back overwhelming emotions. “I apologize for my weakness,” he said. Watch this heartfelt moment.
