Brocade: A Living Heritage

2026-10-15

“It’s like an enormous computer, an incredibly sophisticated machine.” That was how one international journalist described a traditional weaving loom during a visit to the Nanjing Silk Brocade Museum on Oct 14.

Journalists attending the 2026 Belt and Road Journalists Forum explored the intricate art of Yunjin brocade weaving, admiring its exquisite patterns, complex looms and the skill of the craftspeople who keep this centuries-old tradition alive. For the visitors, the experience also raised a meaningful question: How can traditional crafts be passed on to younger generations? Through every thread and every carefully woven pattern, Nanjing’s brocade tells a story of craftsmanship, cultural heritage and traditions that continue to inspire.
