China, a land of ancient traditions intertwined with modern marvels, leaves an indelible mark on anyone who sets foot on its vast and diverse terrain. For many, the first impression of China is one of sheer awe—an overwhelming blend of history, culture, and rapid urban development. My own first impression was a mix of curiosity, admiration and cultural connection that deepened with every experience.
A Diplomatic Gateway to Curiosity
My curiosity about China grew when I had the opportunity to attend a program on Mount Kailash organized at the Chinese Embassy in India. There, I was presented with sacred water from Mount Kailash in a ceremonial vessel. I had already attended several events at the Chinese Embassy, such as National Day and Lunar New Year but it was this spiritual and cultural experience that truly piqued my interest. I was struck by the similarities between Indian and Chinese traditions and felt a deep cultural resonance.
Shenzhen: A Microcosm of Modern China
This led to a stronger desire to learn more about China. In 2017 I participated in a conference in the city of Shenzhen, where I gained a wealth of interesting and scientific insights. I was particularly impressed by the people of China, especially the women. Upon arriving at Shenzhen Airport, I faced an initial challenge as some taxi drivers tried to overcharge me. However, conference volunteers welcomed me warmly and guided me toward an affordable and convenient route to my hotel.
Language Barrier and Warm Gestures
The language barrier proved to be a bit of a challenge as Chinese spoken in China and I do not speak it. Nonetheless a kind police officer assisted me during a rainy moment—he carried my luggage and umbrella and helped me reach my hotel. This gesture reminded me of the Indian tradition of “Atithi Devo Bhava” (The guest is equivalent to God) and the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The world is one family) and the same policy is given by President Xi Jinping.
Cultural and Technological Impressions
After attending the conference, I explored prominent places in Shenzhen such as “Window of the World.” While returning for my flight to Beijing, I mistakenly got off at the wrong station. A local woman who didn’t speak English or Hindi used a translation app to help me find my way to the airport. This demonstrated not only the helpfulness of Chinese women but also their smart use of technology.
In Beijing, I experienced another reminder of civic integrity. Having left my luggage at a metro station, I returned hours later to find it untouched. The incident was emblematic of the order and respect prevalent in Chinese society. The days that followed were filled with cultural enrichment as I visited the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven, and the Forbidden City. These visits were awe- inspiring and unforgettable, leaving a lasting impression of China’s grandeur and historical depth.
Shanghai: A Glimpse into the Future
In 2018, I visited China again—this time attending a conference in Shanghai with some friends. I was astonished by the city’s modernity, which even surpassed New York in some ways. Towering skyscrapers, cutting-edge technology, and a widespread metro network made the city feel like a futuristic marvel.
I also explored local markets, which were surprisingly affordable and offered products of impressive quality. Contrary to the popular belief that Chinese goods are short-lived, the items I purchased during that trip are still in use today.
Cultural Convergence and Mutual Appreciation
Beyond infrastructure and economy, it is the cultural synergy between India and China that has left a lasting impression. Chinese embassy officials have joined us in celebrating Diwali engaging enthusiastically with Indian customs and cuisine.
In a particularly memorable moment, I had the honor of presenting an award to the Ambassador of China to India at his farewell reception. This act not only marked a formal gesture of appreciation but also reflected the mutual respect and enduring goodwill nurtured over years of personal and diplomatic exchange.
Conclusion: Enduring Impressions
I have continued to participate in various China-related programs over the years, and my connection with the country has grown stronger. My first impression of China was filled with wonder, respect, and admiration—and it only deepened with time. China has left a significant impact on me, especially in its technological advancements and fast-paced work culture. It is undoubtedly a unique fusion of ancient wisdom and modern innovation, offering profound experiences to anyone fortunate enough to visit.
