As a third-generation South African with roots in the East and ancestors hailing from India, Africa has always been a place of immense value tome in a multitude of ways. Growing up in the midst of a revolution and witnessing the injustices and inequality enforced through racial division and discrimination, the significance of China’s communist revolution resonated deeply within the underground structures of the liberation movements fighting for freedom against the brutality of South Africa’s apartheid regime. The name Mao Tse-tung became familiar to those who joined the struggle for equality and justice in South Africa. Interestingly, the South African Communist Party (SACP) was established just one month after the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) was formed in 1921.

Historical Context and Cultural Impact

In school, our history lessons were predominantly centered around Western history, including the story of Marco Polo, the Italian traveler who traversed the Silk Road and discovered many of China’s unique and innovative inventions. However, the cultural impact of China was felt in more personal and immediate ways. Kung Fu movies, for instance, captivated young people like myself, igniting our imaginations with visions of emulating Chinese Kung Fu masters. As we grew older, we came to appreciate the discipline, health, and wellness teachings of martial arts, as well as the profound philosophy embedded in their practices.

Experiencing Modern China

In 2023, I had the opportunity to travel to mainland China for the first time, having visited Taiwan a decade earlier. I was part of a media delegation, the first since the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions were lifted. Our host was Xinhua News Agency, China’s largest media organization. The 18-hour flight from Johannesburg to Beijing indicates the vast distance between China and South Africa. Despite the geographical separation, the two countries share a comprehensive strategic partnership and, following the BRICS summit last year, have entered a golden era of relations.

Arriving in China in June 2023, I witnessed a nation that had navigated the challenges of the pandemic with remarkable resilience. The unprecedented transformation in health, wellness, sanitation, and social interaction was evident from the moment we arrived at the airport, where the cleanliness and state-of-the-art facilities were immediately noticeable.

Beijing: A Global Influential Capital

Beijing has evolved into a globally influential capital, its skyline punctuated by state of the art architectural design structures, buildings street networks is clear evidence of the stupendous, unprecedented development that has propelled China to the second-largest economy in the world. The century-long governance of the Communist Party has been central to this people-centred progress. The constructive and enabling use of communication and technology is visible everywhere, and the adherence of the populace to laws and regulations contributes to the city’s functionality and smooth running.

Culinary Diversity and Cultural Richness

One of the most striking aspects of my visit was the culinary diversity. Anthony Bourdain, the late renowned foodie, once said, “Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.” In China, even a greeting can include the question, “Have you eaten?” This highlights the cultural importance of food. The diversity of Chinese cuisine, with its myriad flavors, spices, meats, and vegetables prepared in countless ways, is a reflection of the country’s rich traditions, practices and culinary arts.

Unity and Pragmatism

China spans 5,200 kilometers from west to east, covering five timezones, yet the entire country adheres to Beijing time. This unique approach to timekeeping is a testament to the pragmatism and uniformity that contribute to the nation’s strength and discipline. The socio- economic progress of the people and the state-of-the-art infrastructure and logistics are clear indicators of China’s economic prowess.

Building a Beautiful Dream

China’s rapid modernization and commitment to building a “beautiful dream” are evident in its advancements in science, art, and technology. The nation’s belief that “poverty is not a characteristic of socialism” underscores its dedication to improving the living standards of its people. The remarkable progress in various fields, from space exploration to renewable energy, positions China as a beacon of hope and a model for other developing nations.

A Beacon of Hope to the World

My first impression of China is one of awe and admiration. The country’s historical significance, cultural richness, and remarkable modernization are inspiring. China’s journey   from a nation ravaged by poverty and foreign domination to a global leader in innovation and development is a beacon of hope for the world. It demonstrates that with vision, discipline, and collective effort, nations can overcome immense challenges and achieve extraordinary progress.

China’s story is not just about economic growth but also about the profound transformation of society, the elevation of living standards, and the creation of opportunities for future generations. It is a testament to what can be achieved when a nation is guided by a clear vision and unwavering commitment to its people. My visit to China has left me with a deep appreciation for the country’s achievements and a hopeful outlook on the future of global development and cooperation.
